Aircraft performance is a measurement of how well an aircraft flies. Many factors affect this such as its weight, the atmospheric conditions, pressure and weather. A pilot has to make complex calculations to make sure the aircraft can fly with these various factors considered.
A performance tool was missing from the pilots user journey from initial briefing to ordering fuel to taking off. This project involved integrating a performance calculator into an existing product (mBriefing) and creating a user journey from initial briefing to performing a final takeoff calculation.
I was responsible for liaising with pilots and performance experts at Lufthansa in order to understand the user journey of pilots prior to takeoff and how performance calculations work. During a design sprint I built a functioning prototype using Sketch and InVision which would be used to test the idea on pilots from 5 different airlines.
The user journey we tested had the performance calculator integrated into the Lufthansa mBriefing app with calculations being made prior to ordering fuel and prior to takeoff. This user journey can be viewed in the YouTube video.
The app will be predominently used on iPad devices which is what pilots use in the cockpit. I have worked on 30% (mobile) and 50% width versions as well as landscape and portrait mode versions in both night and day mode. I also flew to Delhi to work closely with the developers to communicate exactly what we needed from the application.
